Back from the Field: Observations from Inspections of 130 Small Water Systems
2011 BC Water and Waste Association (BCWWA) conference

ABSTRACT

Small water systems contend with issues that are distinct from those of larger water systems. These issues generally result from the location, size, and limited resources of small communities. This presentation provides observations and results from a 16-month-long project involving comprehensive assessments of 130 small water systems in 100 First Nation communities throughout British Columbia.

The small water systems were assessed based on field observations of water system infrastructure, level of treatment, type of water source, overall design, operation, history, and administration. Water quality, topography, and site access were also assessed. This presentation will discuss some of the common issues and problems identified during this project along with some interesting and unique ideas employed to remedy them.

Key learning points are:

  • Common and unique issues faced by small water systems
  • Interesting and unique ideas for addressing issues for small water systems
